Introduction

Skin tags are small, soft growths that develop where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are harmless, but they catch on collars and jewellery, and many people simply want them gone.

At Nakedhealth Medispa in Wimbledon, skin tags are assessed and removed by trained practitioners in a CQC-registered clinic. Most people need one appointment. We see clients from across Wimbledon, Raynes Park, New Malden, Kingston and the wider south-west London area.

About the treatment

A skin tag, clinically called an acrochordon, is a benign growth composed of loose collagen fibres and small blood vessels, wrapped in skin. Most hang from a narrow stalk, which is what makes them easy to remove. They are commonly found on the neck, eyelids, underarms, groin, and under the breasts.

Skin tags are associated with friction, ageing, genetics, pregnancy, weight gain and insulin resistance. They are not contagious, and they do not turn into skin cancer.

Assessment comes first

Not every small raised lesion is a skin tag. Seborrhoeic keratoses, viral warts, moles and other lesions can look similar to the untrained eye. Every lesion is examined before any treatment is carried out, and if what you have is not a skin tag, we will let you know and advise on the appropriate course of action. Where a lesion needs to be sent for laboratory analysis, histology is available in the clinic.

How removal works

Skin tags are removed using advanced electrolysis. A fine probe delivers a controlled current to the base of the stalk. This closes off the blood supply and detaches the tag. The technique is precise, which keeps the effect on the surrounding skin to a minimum.

Several tags can usually be treated in the same appointment. Numbers and placement are agreed with you at the consultation.

Benefits, results and expected outcomes

Immediate removal: the tag is removed during the appointment rather than faded over the course of sessions.

Precise: the current is delivered to the stalk, limiting its effect on the surrounding skin.

Multiple tags in one visit: clusters in the same area can generally be treated as a single visit.

Treated tags do not return: once a tag is removed, it does not grow back. New tags can still form elsewhere, particularly in areas of ongoing friction.

What to expect afterwards: a small scab forms over each treated point and sheds on its own. The skin may remain pink for some time after that. Temporary marking is common; scarring is uncommon but possible.

Skin tag removal is a minor procedure, not a risk-free one. Your practitioner will go through what applies to your skin and the sites being treated before anything is carried out.

Are skin tags dangerous?

No. Skin tags are benign and do not develop into skin cancer. That said, if a lesion changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, itches or looks different from the others, have it assessed rather than assuming it is a skin tag.

Can I remove a skin tag myself?

We would advise against it. Home removal kits, ligation bands and freezing products carry a risk of bleeding, infection and scarring, and they remove a lesion that has never been examined. If the growth is not a skin tag, self-treatment destroys the evidence needed to identify it.

Does it hurt?

Pain thresholds vary. Most people describe a brief stinging or heat sensation at each point rather than pain.

Will the skin tag grow back?

A tag that has been fully treated does not return. New tags can appear elsewhere over time, especially in areas where skin rubs, so this is removal rather than prevention.

What is the aftercare?

Keep the area clean and dry, and do not pick the scab — letting it shed on its own gives the best result. Your practitioner will confirm how long to avoid make-up, swimming and exercise for the sites treated. Protect healing skin from sun exposure.

Are skin tags removed on the NHS?

Skin tag removal is generally treated as a cosmetic procedure and is not routinely funded by the NHS, which is why most people have it done privately.

Can you remove skin tags on the eyelid?

Yes, eyelid skin tags are common and treatable. Lesions in this area are assessed carefully at consultation because of the proximity to the eye.
